Let’s be honest. If you run a fleet in India, toll plazas have always been a headache. Drivers fumbling for change, cash gone missing, queues stretching back half a kilometre on a Monday morning — it’s a story every transport manager knows too well.
That headache is about to change shape. From April 10, 2026, the Government of India has officially pulled cash out of the equation at every national highway toll booth across the country. No more cash lanes. No more “bhaiya change nahi hai.” Just FASTag, UPI, and real consequences if your fleet is not ready.
This is not a drill. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a gazette notification on April 2, 2026, making this binding across all 1,150-plus toll plazas on national highways and expressways. The clock is ticking.
From April 10, toll booths will only accept two things: a valid FASTag or a UPI payment. If your vehicle has an active FASTag with sufficient balance, nothing changes — same toll rate, no extra charge, smooth passage.
No FASTag? You can still pay via UPI, but you will be charged 1.25 times the normal toll rate. That premium adds up fast if you are running a fleet crossing four or five tolls per day.
Miss payment at the toll entirely and you get a 72-hour window to pay online. Miss that, and the charge doubles. Let it sit beyond 15 days, and your vehicle gets flagged in the VAHAN database — creating problems well beyond the toll gate, including during fitness certificate renewals and registration transfers.
Cash counters are being dismantled. There is no backup plan.

The government did not just wake up and decide this overnight. FASTag has been mandatory since 2021, and today over 98 percent of toll transactions on national highways are already digital. The groundwork has been laid over four years. April 10 is the government finally cutting the last thread connecting the system to cash.
There is also a less-talked-about reason behind this push: identity-based exemptions. For years, certain individuals have been flashing identity cards at toll booths to skip payment entirely. This has caused genuine revenue leakage and, more practically, chaos in toll queues as booth staff argued over eligibility. The new gazette notification signals the government’s firm intent to end this practice and standardise collection across the board.
From a logistics standpoint, the math on cashless tolling is straightforward. Faster clearance at toll plazas means less idling. Less idling means less fuel burned. For a truck sitting in a toll queue for 8 to 10 minutes versus clearing in under 30 seconds, the fuel savings across a month and a fleet of 50 vehicles is not trivial.
This is where fleet operators need to pay close attention, because the numbers escalate quickly.
Active FASTag with sufficient balance: Standard toll rate. Zero penalty.
UPI payment without FASTag: 1.25 times the standard toll rate.
No payment at toll, paid within 72 hours online: Standard rate applies.
No payment, paid after 72 hours: Double the standard rate.
No payment beyond 15 days: VAHAN database flag, vehicle restrictions, compliance implications.
Now scale that to a fleet. Say you have 40 trucks and 5 of them have FASTags that have expired, lost their KYC linkage, or simply run out of balance. Those 5 trucks are paying a premium at every single toll crossing, every single day. By end of month, that penalty cost could exceed what a proper FASTag management system would have cost you for the entire year.
This is exactly the kind of silent cost that eats into margins without anyone noticing until the accounts team raises a flag three months later.
NHAI launched the FASTag Annual Pass in August 2025, and it took off faster than most expected. Over 56 lakh users signed up in the first six months, clocking more than 26.55 crore transactions.
From April 1, 2026, the pass is priced at Rs 3,075, a slight revision from Rs 3,000 pegged to the Wholesale Price Index. For non-commercial vehicles, it covers 200 toll crossings across the national highway network within a year.
If you have company cars, executives travelling frequently between cities, or service vehicles doing regular highway runs, this pass is worth running the numbers on. A single Delhi-Agra return trip can cost upwards of Rs 500 in tolls alone. The math works out fast.
Activate it through the RajmargYatra app or the NHAI website. It links to a single vehicle and works across all 1,150-plus national highway toll plazas.
Every FASTag transaction carries a timestamp, a location, and an amount. If you are not using that data, you are leaving money on the table. Which routes are bleeding toll costs? Which drivers are taking longer paths that rack up more charges? Which vehicles keep flagging low balance? This data answers all of it — but only if you have a system that captures and surfaces it in real time.
This is an operational win that does not get enough attention. Giving drivers petty cash for toll expenses has always been a source of leakage — genuine or otherwise. With FASTag mandatory, that cash handling disappears entirely. Toll expenses become automatically reconciled, digitally recorded, and impossible to fudge.
Managing five FASTags manually is fine. Managing 50 or 500 is a completely different problem. KYC expiries, low balances, tag malfunctions, blacklisted tags — these issues do not announce themselves. They show up as penalties at 2 AM on a highway in the middle of a delivery run. A fleet management platform that monitors FASTag health across your entire fleet, proactively, is now a business necessity.
The April 10 cashless mandate is one step in a longer journey. NHAI is already evaluating GPS and GNSS-based tolling where charges are calculated on actual distance travelled, not fixed plaza rates. When that system rolls out, fleets that are already digitally integrated will adapt smoothly. Fleets still scrambling for basic FASTag compliance will be caught flat-footed again.
Step 1 — Audit Every Vehicle in Your Fleet
Confirm each vehicle has an active, valid FASTag correctly linked to its registration number in the VAHAN database. Do not assume. Check it.
Step 2 — Verify KYC Status Across All Tags
NHAI now validates FASTag linkage against VAHAN in real time. Outdated or incomplete KYC can trigger tag deactivation without warning. Fix this before April 10.
Step 3 — Set Up Auto-Recharge on All FASTag Accounts
A zero-balance FASTag is as useless as no FASTag at all. Auto-recharge eliminates the single most common cause of toll penalties for fleet operators.
Step 4 — Brief Your Drivers Clearly
Drivers need to know that cash is gone at toll plazas. They also need to know exactly what to do if their FASTag fails — scan and pay via UPI immediately, then report it to fleet management. No guessing at the toll gate.
Step 5 — Map Your High-Frequency Toll Corridors
Know which routes your fleet uses most and calculate the monthly toll cost under the new structure. This drives better budgeting and smarter route optimisation decisions.
Step 6 — Integrate with a Fleet Management Platform
If you do not have one already, this is the moment. Real-time FASTag monitoring, expense tracking, compliance alerts, and driver-level reporting should be standard — not optional.
No transition of this scale goes perfectly on day one. Be ready for a few real-world friction points.
Connectivity Issues at Remote Toll Plazas
If a FASTag fails and your driver needs to fall back on UPI, mobile network coverage at some highway stretches can be unreliable. Brief drivers on escalation steps for zero-connectivity situations.
RFID Tag Reader Errors
Tag readers occasionally misread FASTags, especially if the tag is damaged, placed incorrectly, or the windshield has heavy sun film. Ensure all tags are positioned correctly on clear sections of the windshield before April 10.
Teething Problems at Newly Converted Lanes
Some toll plazas converting cash lanes to FASTag-only may have equipment issues in the first two weeks. Build buffer time into time-sensitive delivery schedules during this period.
We built Fleetable for exactly these moments — when a policy change lands and fleet operators need to adapt fast without losing visibility or control over their operations.
With Fleetable, you get:
The April 10 mandate is going to separate the fleets that run on visibility from the ones that run on guesswork. We want to help you be in the first group.

Your vehicle will be directed to pay via UPI on the spot, at 1.25 times the standard toll rate. Ensure auto-recharge is set up to avoid this.
No. Cash payments are being discontinued at all national highway toll plazas from April 10 as per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways gazette notification.
If payment is not made within 72 hours of crossing, double the standard toll charge is applied. Beyond 15 days, the vehicle is flagged in the VAHAN database.
No. The FASTag Annual Pass is currently available only for non-commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicles must maintain adequately funded individual FASTag accounts.
Certain vehicles remain exempt, including those used by the President, Prime Minister, armed forces, emergency services such as ambulances and fire trucks, and police vehicles on official duty.
India’s national highways are going fully digital in four days. For most of the country’s 1,150-plus toll plazas, the change is largely already done — 98 percent of transactions were digital before this notification even dropped. April 10 is the government closing the last loophole and making it official.
For fleet operators, the real question is not whether to comply. It is whether your systems, your processes, and your team are set up to turn this change into an advantage — better data, lower costs, less leakage, and smoother operations on every route.
The road ahead is digital. Make sure your fleet is ready to move on it.
